One-time Broadcaster Alan Jones Pleads Not Guilty to Twenty-seven Allegations
The veteran broadcaster now faces 25 counts of indecent acts and two charges of inappropriate touching relating to a total of nine individuals, subsequent to legal authorities revealed that two alleged victims would no longer be included in the legal proceedings.
Legal Developments
Jones was scheduled to be present in the courtroom on Thursday to confront forty-four allegations of indecent assault against eleven complainants aged 17 and above that age. However, Jones was not required to appear during the short mention at the court location.
The magistrate learned that 17 counts were ultimately withdrawn and two of the individuals were removed from the legal action.
“There’s been a very significant development in the defendant’s case,” his attorney Bryan Wrench told the court.
Legal Strategy
The lawyer explained that Jones had entered pleas of not guilty on all of the remaining allegations. The trial will proceed in a lower court before a presiding official, instead of in the higher court with a jury panel.
Wrench requested an two-month delay to review what he referred to “unresolved” evidence sharing issues, including claimed unauthorized disclosures to the media.
He highlighted that new accusations had emerged on earlier that week, and press were notified quickly after he was informed by the DPP.
Legal Timeline
The magistrate at first called the duration of the proposed postponement but ultimately agreed to the motion. The case is scheduled to return on 11 November, with the main hearing expected for next year.
The court learned that the DPP anticipated the proceedings would last around 42 days, while the Jones’s lawyer suggested it could extend to as long as five months.
“We lack the resources to deal with a three-month trial,” the magistrate remarked, stating that the matter was a “heavy burden on overburdened resources.”
History
Jones was first accused with carrying out a number of acts in several places across the state between the year 2001 and 2019.
Authorities formed a special task force in last year to look into reported inappropriate acts and unwanted contact events involving the media figure.
The former host has previously rejected all claims and mentioned that he was preparing legal proceedings against publishers for what he called “completely untrue” allegations.
The defendant previously appeared in December, when it was indicated that he would go through a trial by jury.
“I am absolutely not guilty, and I’ll be presenting my argument to a jury,” he stated at the previous hearing. “It’s important to know … these allegations are all without merit or they twist the truth.”
