France Probes Shein and Temu After Adult Toy Scandal

E-commerce platforms such as these four major platforms are currently facing scrutiny in the French Republic for the allegation of allowing underage individuals to access explicit information on their platforms, the French judicial authorities stated on Tuesday.

The country's consumer protection agency had reported the four firms to the legal authorities on Sunday after raising concerns about the marketing of youth-resembling intimate products on Shein's platform during the weekend.

The investigative authorities explained that the online services are being looked into over violent, explicit or “undignified” content that can be viewed by young people.

One of the platforms commented that it views the situation with utmost gravity. The other retailers have also been reached out to for comment.

Wider Probes and Platform Reactions

Two of the retailers are also under investigation over the distribution of content involving youngsters that are of a pornographic type, the authorities revealed.

The matters have been referred to a specialized police unit, the investigative team explained. This division is an arm of the law enforcement that manages the welfare of minors.

The platform stated that the products in question violated its guidelines and were taken down once it was informed of them.

"Sellers found to violate or seeking to bypass these standards will be penalised in compliance with our regulations," AliExpress stated in a release.

On this Monday, the company announced it had banned the sale of every adult toys on its website globally. The based in Singapore company also mentioned that it would permanently block all vendor profiles associated with the illegal distribution of the youth-resembling items and implement tighter measures on its website.

Regulatory Body Assessment and Larger Context

The national consumer agency, the DGCCRF, had stated that the sex dolls' listing details and categorisation left "clear indication as to the child pornography essence" of the items.

The scrutiny of the retailer occurs while the business, which was started in China, makes arrangements for the inauguration on this Wednesday of its maiden long-term real-world shop in the French Republic.

Activists have been seen collected in near the French capital retail outlet where the company is scheduled to establish the outlet.

Shein aims to inaugurate outlets in other France's department stores in cities like multiple French towns.
