European Parliament Vote to Ban Meat-Related Names for Vegetarian Products
In a major vote on Wednesday, European Parliament members voted 355 to 247 to restrict food names such as "burger" and "sausage" solely for meat products.
The Vote Means
If this proposal is implemented, common vegetarian items such as veggie burgers, tofu steak, and vegetable schnitzel could need to be renamed throughout European Union countries.
Nevertheless, for the ban to be enforced, it must receive approval from most of the EU's 27 member states, something that is uncertain.
Key Arguments Behind the Measure
Proponents contend that consumers need clear information and while traditional names should exclusively describe products from livestock.
"An escalope and sausages are goods from animal farming: not laboratory art nor plant products," stated French lawmaker Céline Imart.
Critics, led by environmental lawmakers, called the decision populist tactics.
"Veggie burgers, seitan schnitzel and soy sausage don't mislead shoppers, just rightwing politicians," said Austrian lawmaker Thomas Waitz.
Past Efforts and Legal Background
The marks another effort to regulate such terminology. The European parliament voted down a comparable prohibition in four years ago.
The French government earlier introduced a domestic restriction on traditional names for plant-based foods in 2020, but EU courts determined it invalid under European legislation in 2024.
Business and Public Response
Major German retailers such as Aldi and Lidl object to the measure, cautioning that altering established terms would confuse consumers.
Consumer groups point to surveys showing that most consumers understand product labels when items are clearly identified as vegan.
"Almost 70% of consumers recognize these names provided items are explicitly marked plant-based," said Irina Popescu, a food policy officer at BEUC.
What Following the Vote
This legislative measure next requires review by European governments, and it must obtain majority approval to be enacted.
Considering the divided opinions within both politicians and the public, the outcome of the proposal remains uncertain.
