Doris Included in Irish Team While Joe McCarthy Omitted
Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has selected skipper Doris in his Ireland roster for the autumn matches, however lock McCarthy has been excluded.
Doris, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be fit to play against New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.
Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.
Ulster forward Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash also miss out due to fitness concerns, and full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having hip surgery following the summer tour.
Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped member in the 34-player squad, but Irish rugby authorities says uncapped Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".
After playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 encounter, Ireland will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in the Irish capital.
"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said the coach, back to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to Australia.
In a largely familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the starting number 10 spot. The fly-half role is remains up for grabs, with the two players set to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen with Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At scrum-half, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test wins over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran group of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at number 15.
Wingers Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.
McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has started a couple of his province's URC league games this season and featured in the second string's defeat by England in Bristol previously.
McCarthy was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a cap.
Munster second row Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, while experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.
Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions matches during the tour, is set to cover for Doris should the skipper fails to recover fitness in time to play New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before traveling to the US on the following day.
