Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of the former president's transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that the former president be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

He was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
